ISSUE 78

 Return to the BUILD

“This [issue’s] parts include the opening tool compartment in front of R2-D2’s left leg, together with two tools that fit inside it. Once these are assembled, you can fit them into the compartment, install the hinged lid and fit the compartment itself into the left front panel.”

The Droid Directory section of the magazine is missing this time, which means there is going to be a lot to do!

Assembling the First Arm

Step 1

Remove the three parts from the Gripper Fingers sprue:

Make sure you cut these off the sprue at the right spot, as shown. I recommend using sprue cutters or a sharp hobby knife here for nice clean cuts:

Step 2

Using a tiny drop of super glue, attach the Gripper Fingers to the Gripper Hand by sliding each finger down into a slot, as shown:

Step 3

Super glue the D-shaped end of the Gripper Hand into the matching hole of the gold Tool Arm BP-23:

Step 4

Fit the forked end of one of the Tool Arm Tubes over the longer Tool Pivot BP-24, aligning the screw holes as shown:

Step 5

Bolt the parts together with one 2×4 mm nut (fitted into the hexagonal recess)…

Step 6

… and one (1) 2x8mm silver screw. These should only be tight enough to allow movement, but not be sloppy:

Step 7

Super glue the D-shaped post of the gold Tool Arm BP-23 from Step 3 into the matching hole of this Tool Arm Tube:

Assembling the Second Arm

Step 1

Cut the Tool Probe from the sprue at the point shown below. Do not cut off the small pin on the Tool Probe:

Step 2

Super glue the pin of the Tool Probe into the matching hole in the Tool Hand, as shown:

Step 3

Super glue this Tool Hand onto the thinner end of the silver Tool Arm BP-31, aligning the D-shaped post and hole:

Step 4-6

Fit the forked end of the second Tool Arm Tube over the shorter Tool Pivot BP-27. Once again, secure these together with a 2×4 mm nut and one (1) 2×8 mm silver screw:

Step 7

Finally, super glue the Tool Arm Tube end of this assembly onto the end of the Tool Arm BP-31, aligning the D-shaped post and hole:

Fitting the Tools to the Compartment

The interior of these tool compartment is completely silver and very bland. I added a little bit of color and contract using my Black Sharpie and my Metallic Gold and Bronze Sharpies. It’s nothing crazy, but to me, it looks a little more interesting than before:

Steps 1-2

Fit the shorter Tool Pivot BP-27 (with the Tool Probe) into this hole of the Left Tool Compartment with the pivot nut facing you:

Step 3

Secure the tool assembly into place from behind with one (1) 2.3×6 mm black screw:

Step 4

Fit the other arm into this hole of the compartment with the pivot screw facing you:

Step 5

Secure the tool assembly into place from behind with one (1) 2.3×6 mm black screw:

Step 6

Finally, fold the tools down into the compartment. First, fold the Tool Probe into the compartment:

Then, fold the Gripper Tool down next to it:

Fitting the Tool Compartment Door

Steps 1-2

Attach one of the Hinges to the outer edge of a bracket on the Left Tool Compartment Door with one (1) 2×9 mm black screw. This should be tight enough that it is free to move without being sloppy:

Step 3

Repeat this process on the other end of the door with the other Hinge and one (1) more 2×9 mm black screw:

Step 4

The assembly should look like this. Make sure the hinges can move smoothly:

Step 5

Fit the Left Tool Compartment Door to the Left Tool Compartment, ensuring the Hinges fit down into these square sockets:

Step 6

Secure the Hinges to the compartment from below with two (2) 2.3×6 mm black screws (one for each Hinge):

At this point, you should be able to open and close the compartment door:

Installing the Tool Compartment

Steps 1-2

Retrieve the Left Front Body Panel from Issue 76. Open the door to the Tool Compartment and feed it from behind (door first) through the widest part of the opening, as shown:

Continue passing it through the opening until the compartment rests on the back of the panel:

Step 3

Make sure this tab on the body panel fits into the notch on the side of the Tool Compartment:

There are also these four little tabs that align the compartment to the body panel correctly:

Steps 4-5

Secure the Tool Compartment into place with four (4) 2.3×6 mm black flanged screws:

The first tool compartment is now installed! Here is what the compartment door looks like from the exterior:

Step 6

Collect all four Cover Connectors and align them to these posts on the back of this panel, noting that the two end connectors are different:

Step 7

Fit the thinner Cover Connector over this lug on the top rear of the Left Front Body Panel, aligning the arrows towards each other, and secure it with one (1) 2.3×6 mm black flanged screw:

Steps 8-9

Fit the L-shaped Cover Connectors over these lugs next to the Tool Compartment and secure them with two (2) 2.3×6 mm black screws:

Step 10

Fit the remaining wider Cover Connector over this lug on the bottom rear of the Left Front Body Panel, with the arrow facing away from the panel, and secure with one (1) 2.3×6 mm black flanged screw:

Here is the result after all the Cover Connectors have been installed:

Thoughts

Alright, I love these big issues! These tools complete this panel, ready to be attached to the Front Panel coming up in Issue 86. Everything is plastic.
